Goodbye IQ, Hello Life Skills

My beautiful trio,

When I was growing up, I was always bad at math. I rarely felt bad about it thanks to my mom (Vovó) who was always telling me that my grades wouldn’t dictate my life’s destiny. She always picked me up and encouraged me to keep trying and to not lose sight of what was important.

At twelve years old, that wasn’t a very engaging concept; my mind was elsewhere. I had no idea what she was talking about and paid little attention when she told me about Goleman –the author of the blue book that was always there somewhere –.

Unconsciously, the principles of the blue book, which Dad also had to read to earn a diploma, became the north star of our home.

We are as convinced as he – and, of course, Vovó – that happy and successful people are those who have a high level of emotional intelligence, not those who score 130 or more on IQ tests.

That’s why, at this point, we don’t care if you don’t do well in math, read, write your names, or know your numbers.

We’re far more concerned that you develop the ability to recognize your emotions; that you learn to love them, accept them and, if necessary, overcome them. We want you to acquire the wisdom to self-regulate and use reason in times of difficulty. We strive for you to become persevering women who pursue their goals regardless of the obstacles along the way. We want you to learn to perceive, connect and respond to the emotions of others. We aim for you to understand that the skills to relate to the world at large are becoming more relevant every day, and that they’re the key to being truly happy.

Please don’t forget that your mind, soul, and heart are worth much more than 130 points and, what’s more, these are the things that can actually change the world.

Be happy, my brave ones!
Love,
