Deep Travel, the Real Way to Get to Know the World

My sweet daughters,

Go travel the world! Indulge yourselves by seeing new places, eating diverse dishes, hearing languages you don’t understand. Make sure you don’t just hear them though, try to understand at least some of them.

Give yourselves the opportunity to discover the chilling sound of a fast train and enjoy riding at a snail’s pace through the sand on a camel. Fill your memories with images of different people and recognize yourselves in their faces, because, the truth is, we’re all the same.

Appreciate the messy places; they’re the ones closest to reality. Don’t shy away from alleys, crowds, and traffic. If possible, get out of the tourist routes and get into the reality of the locals. Try something freshly cooked on the street; worse comes to worst, you’ll just be stuck in bed for a couple of days.

Connect with all possible ways of life; respect what progress means to the citizens of the places you visit. Dress by their standards – whether you agree with them or not – it’s someone else’s home and it should be respected. Learn about all religions; surely, they have something to teach us.

Don’t even think about leaving without buying something from a local artisan, remember that the most meaningful gifts are those made by the hands of the people. Don’t miss the shows at the traffic lights; that’s where you’ll discover the purest form of creativity.

Surrender yourself to the art of the countries you visit. Theater, songs, stories, and books teach us about their history, traditions, and culture. Meet the leaders who made the country and its freedom possible, and, if they move your heart, add them to your list of heroes and heroines.

Today, the five of us are living this. However, the day will come when the three of you will be in a car without a GPS, lost, asking the locals which route to take. I can see it now, one at the wheel, one with a map in their hands – full of notes made by dad – and the other serving the traditional infusion, mate. That day, I’ll smile knowing that you became millionaires.

Let’s fill our memories with experiences!
